Overview

Steps To A HealthierNY :: A Healthier Broome County, One Step at a TimeSteps To A HealthierNY is part of a national health promotion and disease prevention initiative entitled Steps To A HealthierUS, launched by the Department of Health and Human Services in 2003. This five year cooperative agreement program aims to help Americans live healthier, longer, and better lives by reducing the burden of diabetes, overweight, obesity and asthma and addressing three related risk factors- physical inactivity, poor nutrition and tobacco use.

Broome County is part of a four county project lead by the New York State Department of Health through funding from the Centers for Disease Control. Only 12 projects in the nation were awarded funding in the first year of the Steps initiative to implement school and community-based initiatives that enhance and expand existing, evidenced based efforts in our community to promote policy development, implementation and environmental change. As a result of this initiative, it is hopeful that Broome County residents will take personal responsibility for their health and empower the community to take social responsibility to adopt healthy lifestyles and reduce the burden of chronic diseases.

Shape Up Broome! The Healthiest Challenge of 2007

The Broome County Health Department's Steps to a HealthierNY program is helped to coordinate the first ever county-wide healthy lifestyle team challenge—Shape Up Broome. This challenge aligned with the Steps program goals of reducing obesity and diabetes by increasing physical activity and eating healthier.

Shape Up Broome is a team fitness and weight loss challenge designed to increase physical activity levels and provide skill development and social support for healthy lifestyle habits. A unique aspect of the program is to promote long-term changes in lifestyle choices (healthy eating and regular physical activity) that foster maintenance of weight loss.

“Being unhealthy hurts us in so many ways,” remarks Broome County Executive Barbara Fiala. “Making healthier food choices, living actively, and being tobacco free can have a tremendous social and economic impact on individuals, families and communities,” states Executive Fiala.

And the Shape Up Broome 2007 Winners Are…

Winners received spa packages to Traditions at the Glen, courtesy of Excellus BC/BS and Security Mutual.

Broome County Department of Health Announces New Young Lungs at Play Initiative to Make Playground Areas in Parks Tobacco Free

The Broome County Health Department's Steps to a Healthier New York program, Tobacco Free Broome and Tioga Coalition, United Health Services Hospitals and the Asthma Coalition of the Southern Tier are joining together to promote a new initiative to make playground areas in parks throughout Broome County tobacco free zones. The initiative, Young Lungs at Play, was developed to minimize children's exposure to secondhand smoke while playing at public parks.

“Secondhand smoke is a proven health risk, and we must do everything we can to keep it away from our children,” said Barbara Fiala, Broome County Executive. “This new initiative will help us protect our children from the adverse effects cigarette smoke can have on their heart and respiratory systems.”

On May 17, 2007 Broome County legislature passed a resolution to have all playground areas in Broome County parks tobacco free. This legislation will enhance the quality of life for children who use these playgrounds. Binghamton's Mayor Matthew T. Ryan is also showing support for this initiative. Those spearheading the initiative are hopeful that all other municipalities will follow Broome County's lead and develop similar tobacco free zones for their playgrounds. These zones will need to include plans for enforcement of the tobacco free areas, and education for park employees and the community at large about the new tobacco free zones. Municipalities that adopt these tobacco free zones in park playground areas will receive weather resistant signs to mark the tobacco free zones along with educational materials and assistance in conducting community education events.

Local Students Join Thousands Around the World for International Walk to School Day

On October 3rd over 100 students from Calvin Coolidge Elementary School in Binghamton, and Clayton Avenue Elementary School in Vestal, walked and biked to school. In the U.S., International Walk to School Day included 5,000 schools from all 50 states. Walkers and bikers from the U.S. joined children and adults in 40 countries around the world.
